What is a Clutch?

A clutch is a mechanical device which engages and disengages power transmission especially from driving shaft to driven shaft. In the simplest application, clutches connect and disconnect two rotating shafts (drive shafts or line shafts).

In more simple terms, when you press the left of the three pedals in your manual transmission vehicle, the clutch disconnects two rotating shafts in the vehicle, allowing you to change gear.

As Clutches are used so often, they need replacing around once every 60’000 miles, some may last over 100’000 miles. You will know when to change your clutch, by how hard it becomes to change gear as your driving.
